Fall in Minnesota

Fall in Minnesota is more than a season — it’s an invitation. The magic of autumn shows up in traditions that families return to year after year, and in new places waiting to be discovered. Pumpkin patches, orchards, trails, and towns across the state open their doors, welcoming us to slow down, savor the colors, and make memories together.

A Statewide Celebration

Across Minnesota, fall is as much about people as it is about pumpkins or leaves. In Duluth, Haley Hedstrom of Visit Duluth says families are drawn by “favorites like Canal Park, Enger Tower, Lester Park, and Hartley Nature Center — all offering trails, playgrounds, and incredible views of Lake Superior dressed in autumn color.” And she reminds us that fall is about unique traditions, too: “The North Shore Scenic Railroad offers fall color tours as well as The Great Pumpkin Train where guests will enjoy fun activities at the Depot before a 90-minute round trip train ride to pick the perfect pumpkin!”

Farther south, in Rochester, Erin O’Brien of Experience Rochester points to the mix of city and countryside. “Sekapp Orchard,” she says, “is a third-generation, 60+ year orchard in Rochester with produce, u-pick apples, corn maze, straw bale maze, and numerous other attractions.” And when families want to keep exploring, she highlights Rochester’s “85 miles of paved, interconnected walking and biking trails through a variety of scenery. It’s a great way to see the fall colors.”

Kate Carlson of Visit Winona reminds us that the Mississippi River Valley is a show all its own. “Our 500-foot bluffs are encrusted with a tapestry of gold, red, and orange each October and the amazing annual bird migration is sending upwards of a million birds up and down the Mississippi River Valley Flyway.” She calls it “one of the most beautiful drives in the country.”

From the Brainerd Lakes to Thief River Falls, tourism leaders echoed the same invitation: come see what makes their communities shine in autumn. Kathy Reichenbach from Nisswa said it simply: “The Fall colors are breathtaking around our many lakes; the shops and restaurants are open to greet our visitors.” Elizabeth Wilde of Visit Thief River Falls added, “As the crisp air settles in and the leaves burst into brilliant shades of red, gold, and orange, Thief River Falls becomes a picture-perfect autumn destination.”

Voices of the Farms

At the heart of Minnesota’s fall experience are the family farms — places that blend generations of tradition with family fun.

Fran Barten of Barten Pumpkins recalls how it all began: “Around 1990, our 4-H Club held a Biggest Pumpkin growing contest at our farm. Barten children put the extra pumpkins by the road and they sold in a day.” What started small has become a destination. “Today, we have a large parking lot, no fee to enter, weekend entertainment, and we work hard to keep all our guests safe and happy.”

Her joy is in the people. “Happy families everywhere — babies, teens, college kids, grandparents, ladies groups on a day out. Everyone is in a good mood.” The memories she treasures most? “Children do not want to go home, they are having so much fun… Seeing a child take daddy’s hand and walk up the big log and jump off the end into daddy’s arms.”

At Stoney Brook Farms in Foley, Brad Chmielewski sees thousands of visitors each year. “We have over 30 activities at our Harvest Fun Days event,” he explains. “Some of the more popular ones are getting lost in our 65 acres corn maze with 3 different difficulties, jumping on the giant jump pad, taking a ride on our wagon train ride, or pedaling up our pedal powered roller coaster!” More than the activities, though, he values connection: “The biggest reason we do this is to connect with the public. We sell all our produce wholesale, so we never get to truly connect with people. Opening up our farm allows us our own unique identity.”

At Pinehaven Farm in Wyoming, Jacque Hastings describes the season this way: “The atmosphere is very joyful and electric. Between all the happy and smiling faces of our seasonal staff and our fall guests and the bright colors of all the attractions and photo ops, it’s impossible not to feel joy when you are at the farm.” Families return year after year, she says, because “many of our guests remember coming to Pinehaven Farm as a kid and now they are bringing their kids. Kids are having the best time and parents are reliving their childhood.”

And at Afton Apple Orchard in Hastings, Cindy Femling keeps it simple: “For us, running a pick-your-own apple orchard has never just been about growing fruit—it’s about creating a place where people feel welcome.” With 250 acres of apples, berries, pumpkins, a 15-acre corn maze, hayrides, a playground, and even a petting farm, families have plenty of ways to enjoy the season.

Tradition Meets Discovery

Some farms highlight their scale — Brad Chmielewski notes Stoney Brook grows “over 1,000,000 pumpkins a year.” Others highlight the traditions that bring people back. Fran Barten says families return to Barten Pumpkins “to take the family photo in the same spot every year.” Cindy Femling says families return to Afton Apple because “they enjoy keeping family traditions alive while picking fruit fresh from the farm and breaking away from the day to day grind.”

And everywhere, there’s something new. Pinehaven added a Pumpkin House photo op and playful painted dinosaurs this year. Barten Pumpkins introduced alpaca visits. Afton Apple offers “Touch a Tractor” weekends and an annual Apple Fest.

An Invitation to Families

Minnesota’s fall season is wide enough for everyone: farmers working 14-hour days, local chambers hosting festivals, visitors snapping photos from a bluff, kids racing through corn mazes, and parents breathing in the crisp October air.

As Fran Barten puts it: “God has created such beauty in nature. We want to share that in a family friendly way.”

Or in the words of Kate Carlson from Visit Winona: “It’s a unique blend of storytelling and history, set in a picturesque fall landscape.”

The invitation is here, waiting. Across Minnesota, fall is not just a season to admire — it’s a season to live.
